The Center for Disease Control and Prevention published the first Technical Report: Multi-National Monkeypox Outbreak, United States, 2022 on July 28, 2022. Since then, the CDC has published a total of four technical reports. Each technical report provides timely updates regarding CDC’s ongoing response to the MPOX outbreak in the United States and shares preliminary results of new analyses. This is in effort to improve understanding of the outbreak and inform further scientific inquiry. The report features a combination of standing topics and the results of specialized analyses. To date, four reports have been issued (links to each are below).
On May 17, 2022, the United States reported the first monkeypox case in the current outbreak. As of November 16, 2022, there were 28,999 - Total confirmed monkeypox/orthopoxvirus cases across the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Case counts include those who tested positive for either monkeypox virus or orthopoxvirus as described in the 2022 Monkeypox Response case definition.
The epidemiological curve of reported monkeypox cases to CDC through October 21, 2022, with a 7-day moving daily average (which adjusts visually for fluctuations in daily disease reporting), shows that reported cases peaked nationally in early August 2022. The cumulative cases by jurisdiction aligned in time by the number of days that have passed since that jurisdiction first had one cumulative case per million population and the daily case counts per 100,000 population for the top six jurisdictions reporting the highest percentage of cases.
While the technical reports are intended for scientific audiences, additional information, including materials targeted to the general public, are available on CDC’s monkeypox site.
