The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local health officials, are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to kratom products. Kratom is a plant that grows naturally in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. It comes in a variety of forms such as leaves, pills, capsules, powder, and tea. A common brand or supplier of products associated with the outbreak have not been identified at this time. The outbreak of Salmonella is from a rare strain of Salmonella I 4,[5], 12: b:-, and evidence collected has indicated that kratom or products that contain kratom are likely the source of this outbreak.
